Constructed almost entirely from black-and-white photographs, La Jetée follows a man haunted by an image from his childhood and chosen to take part in a time-travel experiment. In a world devastated by nuclear war, past, present and future gradually close in around the same memory. Editing transforms still images into cinema and recollection into a cycle from which there appears to be no escape.
